Auckland hosts WordCamp, and aint it great!

by

When you’re a WAHM freelancer the first thing you notice is the lack of techies to talk with so it’s great to be able to break out and attend events like Auckland’s WordCamp.

I only made it to the afternoon session but the techie sessions were worth going to:

  1. An intro to HTML5 and CSS3 and why we should care :)
  2. Custom Pages – opening WordPress up to a whole new style of development
  3. WordPress Plugins and customisation

Some of the info was possibly a bit superficial but hanging out in the corridor afterwards with WP developers and guys from Instinct.co.nz was just the thing for a tech starved geek. So much better than infracting fools at dp!

Great to catch up with Michael Brandon too, find out what he’s been up to and chat SEO.

I’m all set to have a play with the e-commerce plugin so I can quiz Jeffry Ghazally at his session tomorrow.

Countdown Supermarkets: slick newsletter header

by

I guess when you have the advertising budget that Woolworths (owner of Woolworths, Foodtown and Countdown) have then you can put some slick little gimmicks into your online newsletters.

I wonder how many people actually noticed their name?

One flaw in their system is that the email is from 21K7GCo2DCVN5@onecard.eid.co.nz. I’m a Thunderbird user so I have the option of loading remote content or saving the email address into my address book. One look at that and I figure I’m going to have a different sender every time. How many people do they lose because the remote content isn’t viewed?

Newspapers & TV News: for fun or facts? Their role is changing!

by

We get the NZ Herald delivered and its a staple part of our morning and in the evening we watch the news. Their role is steadily changing and they need to respond.

Go back 10 years and there weren’t the “fun sites” and social networking of today. If you wanted oddball humour you had to go looking for it. Today it comes in a constant stream through Facebook and Twitter.

I can get the latest news the same way but I tend to scan headlines and short articles preferring not to read lengthy text onscreen.

So what, precisely, do I want from a newspaper or TV news?

I expect depth and insight from a local perspective. Interviews and analysis. Leave out the winner of American Idol – if I cared but missed it, I’d check online. Leave out singers who divorce. Its all froth and no substance. Instead, give me more world news and international politics.

On the flipside you have guys like Jeff Dowler who doesn’t “get” social media. He’s probably happy to have fluff with his traditional news media because he’s not getting it anywhere else.

What about you?

Leasing Domains… a lost opportunity

by

The idea of leasing a domain has never appealed to me but as I was driving back from the beach this morning I had the radio on and there was an ad for the theatre production “Rent” with the domain rentauckland.co.nz. No, not rent but rentauckland!

Rent the show should have rented the domain

Suddenly I understood how leasing a domain can really work for both the customer and the domain owner.

With a premium domain like rent.co.nz (within the NZ market) the price to purchase would be high and unjustified for a show doing a season here.

Renting the domain would have been much more realistic and would have been just one more item in the marketing budget.

The owner would retain control and after the contract expired the domain would have gained any number of inbound links from promotional sites & personal blogs.

I wonder if the renting option was ever explored? If not, it was a wasted opportunity for both the owner and the theatre company.

The Generation Gap that swallows you whole!

An SOS went out today from a young BMX racer via Facebook that his website had been hacked. I took a look at http://marcwillers.com/ and the first thing that struck me was that it wasn’t a typical hacking… closer inspection of the Facebook messages showed that there was some sort of conflict between Marc and “RMC” – the original site developer.

A few hours later and Marc’s site is back to normal, but with a new post of midget porn dedicated to RMC.

Now I’ve met both these guys and RMC runs (owns?) a large bike store across town. I’m guessing amongst his mates he has a reputation as a prankster (although there will be a hipper name these days).

Marc made it to the Olympics in his chosen sport and it’s a tough sport where you need as much of a mental edge as with any other. I race BMX too and there’s something very special about it and the people

Place Big Brother at the Pumps and track down Hit and Run Drivers!

by

While the Police scour the Helensville district for the killer white ute that seems to have targetted Dr Robinson and run him off the road with fatal consequences it seems time that the community embraced some of the “Big Brother” measures that could make our communities safer without creating civil liberty type problems.

One of our petrol station “brands” recently proposed scanning all vehicle registrations and comparing to a hot list when they pulled up the pumps. If you weren’t registered or had outstanding fines, sorry, no petrol. After all, supplying petrol could be seen as aiding and abetting. That alone makes the investment in the technology worthwhile.

Lets take this one step further.

Jobleader.co.nz – heard of them? heard from them?

by

Years ago I encountered a company called NBD and posted my very popular thread NBO – National Business Online.

I was alerted recently that they’ve started up two new websites: jobleader.co.nz and nzcareerexpo.co.nz. It’s an ambitious project given that the Herald have their search4jobs and there’s seek.co.nz dominating the market.
The good news is that they appear to be trying to make a legitimate business and I’ve seen billboards around town promoting the jobleader.co.nz website.

The bad news (according to Melinda) is that their sales techniques haven’t changed.

So, I was wondering, are there any other New Zealand (or Australian) companies with first hand experiences?

Web Developers in New Zealand

by

Today’s the day!!! The Web Developers Association of New Zealand is officially launched.

The NZ industry has had informal networking groups such as the PHPUG and Meetup.com organised gatherings but has no national identity. Something which is sorely needed.

Dennis Smith has taken the bull by the horns and started up the WDANZ. There are three levels of membership and it’s primarily aimed as a training and marketing tool for local developers.

I spoke with Dennis last month about Read the rest of this entry »
