Phishing via a forum’s Private Messages

January 22nd, 2008 by Sarah King

We are all used to the phishing emails that we get sent from “banks” and “auctions sites” – trying to steal your logins for financial gain. A new phase has started where phishing messages are sent via the private message (PM) facility at a forum.

This is a hot topic at DigitalPoint right now as there is a bot working it’s way down the memberslist and doing bruteforce or dictionary attacks on the logins. I’ve just set up a new forum at ShareChat and set up Andrew as a user. It’ll be interesting to see how it takes off in it’s new format.

It’s using vBulletin which has been as easy as the Invision forum I put up for the APIA – there’s alot of features in both.
