Naughty Kids
December 28th, 2004 by Sarah KingNaughty kids lose gifts to eBay.
Rockon folks. I can sit here and pass judgement on the parents for letting things get that far but:
- I knew I was beaten at 2 kids and they have 3 boys.
- Mine aren’t that old yet so really I’m just plain scared that mine might go the same way.
Infact my darling 7 year old girl today put one of those sticker tatoos in a circle around her belly button and then refused to go swimming at the beach because it might come off. She’s 7! Crikey, what will she be like as a teenager?

I’m working on a Mambo project and have a few others in the pipeline so keen not only to make it work, but to be sure that it’s working well. I’ve read heaps of docs and information but they often fall short. Well, this one took some finding and is a very useful addition to all the standard resources. Thanks Joseph!
Brick Lane
December 5th, 2004 by Sarah KingBrick Lane by Monica Ali got huge press when it was first released and it’s taken me a long time to get around to reading it and I’m so glad I did.
When I lived in London, as all Kiwis do at some stage, I had friends living in squats in the estates she describes, I sold pharmaceuticals to Doctors just like the one in the book, and I lived, for a year, in Wembley which was dominated by “Asians”.
It’s funny, because in NZ Asians come from China, Korea and Thailand while Indians come from India, Bangladesh and Pakistan. In the UK Asians come from the subcontinent and Orientals come from China etc. Most people in both nations make little effort to distinguish any further.
It was fabulous reading the book, telling the London story from the other side. I knew the landscape, the people but I was also being offered a rare glimpse inside.
Thank you Monica, for writing Brick Lane.
Beach Ed
December 3rd, 2004 by Sarah Kingwhat a fun day I had yesterday!
I was one of many parent helpers who accompanied 3 classes of 5 year olds out to Bethells Beach for a Beach Education day. Bethells is a pretty tough beach with strong undercurrents and rips and black sand. Quite different from the sort of beach we normally visit.
Despite drizzel and wind we all had a blast and the kids had about 20 minutes playing in the surf. The parents stood in the surf forming a human blockade. Luckily the majority of parents and children had wetsuits and it was a great opportunity for the littlies to safely experience the wild west coast surf.
