“Get off Google or I’ll sue”

by

My NBO post has been the source of some attention lately, not the least by one woman who is unhappy to be mentioned there. We’ve spoken on the phone and as far as I can gather all the information is accurate – the only problem that exists is that her ex-employer still uses her details on some documents. I don’t think any of it is actually wrong.

She’s asked for some of the comments about her to be withdrawn and I’ve done that but now her lawyer is getting vocal because Google has not yet de-indexed the page. Given the 404s I find daily online I have no expectation that Google will de-index anytime soon so I’m expecting legal action over this one. Read the rest of this entry »

Checking out Google Friend Connect

by

I missed the launch of Googles foray into social networking tools – they’ve launched a collection of Facebook like tools to be added to your own site giving friends, a wall, rating tools etc. It’s pretty good and I couldn’t get over how quick and easy it was to add it to 5nz.com.

I’ll add it here too, well worth a look since most of the people I know have a google account :) Read the rest of this entry »

Akismet learns Russian?

by

In the first real test of Akismet‘s flexibility it now needs to learn Russian. For the last few days the flow of spam has been consistent – and uncaught.

It’s hard to imagine that many Russians are reading this blog but the link back to the site is worth something and there must be naive webmasters out there who approve this stuff.

It’ll be interesting to see how many days it takes for Akismet to learn Russian and start removing this stuff from my queue.

Nude photos shock teacher

Now there’s a headline to grab your attention: Nude photos shock teacher

The print version of the article included a screenshot of the dating page, but to summarise: Small town teacher takes naked photo (raunchy? or one of those “before I started my diet” pics? who knows) and emails to a friend. Someone (the friend?) then doctors a dating website page to include the photo and sends it to the school principal with a complaint.

You might fall out with your friends, but trying to get them fired… now that’s low. Read the rest of this entry »

Cuil is the new search engine on the block providing a new competitor in the search engine wars. How they will stack up against MSN, Yahoo and Google remains to be seen but it seems these guys have a few issues yet to iron out. Read the rest of this entry »

vBulletin needs to tackle Private Message Spam

by

Thanks to the Black Hat community not keeping a lid on their activities I’ve been made aware of a spamming system targetted at the DigitalPoint forums. It can, however, be used on any vBulletin forum – I would assume. Some have implemented different rules around when you can send a private message, and some might even have captcha – but it’s all circumventable. Read the rest of this entry »

LiveMesh – the end of PHP?

by

Microsoft’s .Net applications have failed to dominate the web world. Certainly there are alot of sites using it, and alot of very good applications built in it but the closed door, clip the ticket approach has blocked alot of interest. Add to that the lower hosting costs of PHP and you’re onto a winner with smaller enterprises.

Now Microsoft are announcing that their focus has moved away from the PC and onto the Web and that LiveMesh is their new baby. We’re yet to see what LiveMesh actually is but LiveSide define it as: Read the rest of this entry »
