Removing A Mambo/Joomla Template
February 23rd, 2007 by Sarah KingNow there’s a misleading title but I had cause to ask a Mambo site to output some info without a template. Sadly it didn’t want to do that – although if you know another method, please leave a comment…
The official method is to call www.mysite.com/index2.php but that still parses the page and adds an alternate stylesheet and header information. It’s good, but not perfect. Read the rest of this entry »
Using a News Feed with Joomla and Mambo
May 14th, 2006 by Sarah KingIt’s easy to add a newsfeed to a Mambo or Joomla website. The normal place for them is on the right hand column of a 3 column layout. In this example we’re doing just that. Read the rest of this entry »
Genuine 404s and Google Verification
April 12th, 2006 by Sarah KingGoogle is steadily building up it’s webmaster tools and winning over the hearts of webmasters. As covered in my Google Sitemaps and Verification post the feedback can be very, very useful.
I have run into problems though on Mambo and Joomla sites because they don’t throw true 404s so as far as GoogleBot knows every page is a good page. Google and Googlebot have given webmasters an incentive to change… access to the stats!
To get Mambo and Joomla to throw a 404 you need three things! Read the rest of this entry »
Using DOMIT! RSS
December 13th, 2005 by Sarah KingI’ve worked with DOMIT! because it’s part of the Mambo and Joomla CMS systems so I expected this to be a doddle. Sorry, it wasn’t. There were 2 undefined constants and one code defect which all took time to identify.
There is no doubt that the code in DOMIT! is far more exhaustive than that of Magpie but, really, you don’t need it if all you’re planning to do is parse an RSS onto a webpage. Read the rest of this entry »
Link Vault for Mambo / Joomla
October 13th, 2005 by Sarah KingI’ve been using Link Vault on this blog and another site for while and the system seems to work well. I hadn’t put it on my hobby site because I hadn’t taken the time to create a module to place it on the site. However the site has a stack of pages so lots of opportunity to increase my vaultage.
I’ve just completed a small module I’ve written for Mambo 4.5.3 and Joomla 1 which will make it easy for users to add Link Vault to their sites. The module replaces Step 2 of the installation instructions… Read the rest of this entry »
Adsense Module for Mambo / Joomla
October 12th, 2005 by Sarah KingI decided it was about time I added Adsense to the BMX site. I’d written a custom module for my kiwi blogs site and just had to change the script. I decided this could lead to a maintenance headache for me so I’ve turned it into a “proper” module.
In this version you add Google’s script as a parameter, set the alignment (ie center, left, right) and the number of pixels above and below – this is top stop crowding and accidental clicks, et voila!
This module could be used to put any text into the modules section, not just Adsense.

Which CMS should I use?
September 9th, 2005 by Sarah KingWhich Content Management System is a common question so I created a page to note my thoughts, but I’ll use this post to record any comments…
